Tim's Vermeer (2013)
Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all art: How did Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer manage to paint so photo-realistically 150 years before the invention of photography? Spanning a decade, Jenison's adventure takes him to Holland, on a pilgrimage to the North coast of Yorkshire to meet artista David Hockney, and eventually even to Buckingham Palace. The epic research project Jenison embarques on is as extraordinary as what he discovers.

Great movie on several levels, insight into Vermeer, the brilliant learning process Tim followed, and on another level Penn and Teller make a kick ass documentary. If you have the least interest in the world around you watch this, and bribe your jaded teenagers to see it.

Fascinating art documentary structured like a whodunnit, or rather, a howdunnit. Independently wealthy inventor Tim Jenison tries to solve the mystery of how 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer made the leap from the flat, playing card-like portraits of the time to painting luminous photorealistic masterpieces like Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Music Lesson. Jenison, who invented video technology that practically all TV studios use today, simply could not believe that Vermeer could paint such portraits without the aid of technology, and devises an experiment to see if he, will no training as an artist, could paint an equivalent painting using only technology available in Vermeer's time.

As an art and art history enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Before I even heard of TIM'S VERMEER, I had read various articles, some of them by David Hockney, about theories similar to those posed in it. However, they usually applied to earlier Renaissance painters, such as Van Eyck and Leonardo. So this gave me a broader understanding about who might have used Camera Obscuras to aid them in the arts. I also loved seeing this applied in real life, and the scenes of Tim painting the room were absolutely mesmerizing. I loved this film, however, I can imagine that non-art lovers could find TIM'S VERMEER a bit tedious.but on the whole, this is a well-crafted, well-informed and well-thought out documentary, and really does prove that art and science are more related than we give them credit for.

A very soft spoken documentary of Tim Jensen, a tinkerer and inventor with no artistic training, who decides to paint a Vermeer. He tries to prove that the qualities of gradual light shifts in Jan Vermeer's paintings could have been created with optics available in the 17th century.

The result is both a captivating history lesson and a tense intellectual thriller that dares to ask big questions about creativity and technology.
