Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all art: How did Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer manage to paint so photo-realistically 150 years before the invention of photography? Spanning a decade, Jenison's adventure takes him to Holland, on a pilgrimage to the North coast of Yorkshire to meet artista David Hockney, and eventually even to Buckingham Palace. The epic research project Jenison embarques on is as extraordinary as what he discovers.

I had this documentary on my to watch list for ever...now I finally saw it and glad I did! This is fascinating stuff. Tim Jenison has a lot of money, big ideas and intelligence and decides to recreate and paint one of Vermeer's most famous paintings proving that he used mirrors and camera escura kind of technology to paint such photo-realistic paintings way before photography was invented. Without any background in painting and art (ok, he is kind of a genius) he also tries to prove that using this technique anyone can be a master painter. Intriguing and fascinating, this a story about an obsession that can make look and art in a completely new light!

The most fascinating documentary I've seen this year! As an artist and scientist this movie was right in the zone for me -- and the personality is incredible too

It shows a five year dedication of a man, and his knowledge that he shares with the whole world about an equally great man that lived 350 years ago.

So what if he "wasted" his time, I don't understand why viewers are bothered. He's not your life, and I don't agree with the word "waste." thanks to him, we can see Vermeer realistically. I think WE wasted our youth studying art history with Vermeer in it. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed Tim's devotion and work. Many thanks. Curiousity and learning are two important traits to have.

The result is just about the most fun you can have while learning, partly because it strips away any tangents beyond the task at hand, offering a lean, 80-minute account of how this crazy guy erected his own Everest and then proceeded to climb it.
