A production company begins casting for its next feature, and an up-and-coming actress named Rose tries to manipulate her filmmaker boyfriend, Alex, into giving her a screen test. Alex's wife, Emma, knows about the affair and is considering divorce, while Rose's girlfriend secretly spies on her and attempts to sabotage the relationship. The four storylines in the film were each shot in one take and are shown simultaneously, each taking up a quarter of the screen.

Four handheld cameras. Shot in one take and in real time for 97 minutes. The objects of the cameras intersect the quarters of the screen and the actors have to improvise throughout, working only along the outline of a story revolving around a movie production. It is said that it was shot 15 times to allow the improvisation to mature! Possibly for the first time, the filming style is the main character and the story and its characters are merely the supporting roles.

Conctivity and simultaneity presented in an intriguing format. Gives one pause in considering how everything is going on all the time and can easily approach chaos nd confusion as we get overloaded with narratives. Insome ways it takes the filmic version of a novel and gives it simultaneous continuity. One quiclkly realizes though how quickly visual overload can occur. Fortunatley, we only live our lives in one story at a time.

Great concept; sometimes the split-screen thing is frustrating because the sound alternates and you can see the dialogue you're missing. However, the great thing about having this on DVD is that it lets you choose which screen to hear, so you can watch once for each screen and get all four viewpoints in their entireties.

easily one of my new favorite movies of all time. it's so real and fresh. the characters are so realistic but yet so surreal. the film guides you yet there's so much going on that you can look beyond it. you can watch it so many times and never see everything. the four shots each play off each other so well. you'll see horribly tragic moments going on in one frame while the funniest thing you've ever seen occurs in another. it comments so well on life. not to mention the fact that it was done in four cameras on one continuous 90 minute take and was comeplety improvised around a basic plot idea is incredible.
