The ultimate homage to Akira Kurosawa (his debut being judo movies), Thrown Down is a strange mix of drama, martial arts, and comedy. Three central characters: The main guy, a former judo champion who does nothing but run a failing club and drinks, a young prodigy who wishes to fight him before glaucoma takes his eyesight, and a young woman who wants to be a famous singer. The main drag that slows this movie down is that the plot is quite aimless. Its not a Rocky-esque sports movie, its not a full out martial arts movie (it has very little in it), and the movie's pace can irritate. The characters do not do much for the first hour, but after the main ex-champion's mentor is hospitalized, he changes his ways to fight again. It has decent camera work and acting, but the movie is strange and due to its aimless plot, it doesn't really come together we as a complete movie. Perhaps if it was more like a sports movie or at least a buddy movie, it would have worked better. PS. the competitive gangster boss was hilarious, easily the best character in the movie

Good judo film. The director chooses to show more with what the characters don't say in this film. About a young man going blind and renewing the fire inside him.. I highly recommend it.

My favorite Johnnie To movie. Absolutely love the story and the tribute to Akira Kurosawa.

Tribute to Akira Kurosawa in color screen, great direction by JTo in artistic shooting as well in character development. Louis Koo role should be more fit for Lau Ching Wan instead.
