Teen angst in the tradition of Rebel Without a Cause but wrapped in the guise of a Bonnie & Clyde crime drama. This is the kind of noir that genre fans drool over. Farley Granger (who?) shows enormous promise in this, one of his first roles. Why oh why didn't we see more from this talented young star?

Hollywood debuts this confident, self assured and ambitious are rare. Nicholas Ray takes a relatively straight forward story and infuses it with inventive visual ideas that are far ahead of it's time. Undoubtedly an influence on New Waves, both French and Hollywood.

Fantastic tragic romance. The performances are fantastic, the romance very natural and real. Think "Natural Born Killers 1948", except they are trying to escape their fates. Nicholas Ray has a amazing sure hand in the direction, balancing the style with competant story telling. Great stuff!

The almost perfect first film of Nicolas Ray. Great shots, romantic leads that really connect with each other and thus, with the audience too.
