A Pentecostal pastor, Lemuel Childs, and his believers handle venomous snakes to prove themselves before God. Lemuel's daughter, Mara holds a secret that threatens to tear the church apart: her romantic past with a nonbeliever, Augie. As Mara's wedding to a devoted follower looms, she must decide whether or not to trust the steely matriarch of their community, Hope, with her heart and life at stake.

The swerve into bizarre melodrama in the final third knocks the film permanently off course, reducing a potentially rich examination of religious extremism into a missed opportunity.

After a slow-burn first hour, Poulton and Savage unfurl a climax that unexpectedly brings together all of the pieces fighting for Mara. It’s nerve-jangling and raw, and the filmmakers earn their tension and the gruesome harm that comes with it. (There are plenty of snakes.) All that goodwill comes close to collapse, however, as Poulton and Savage charge toward the finale.

A harrowing film that was truly an American rural horror story. For me the riveting suspense came from the way the younger characters reacted to and were trapped in their stultifying environment, complete with its warped live-poisonous-snake-centered religion, because their elders continued to believe that venomous snake bites provided a “cleansing.” But bad things kept happening – and tragically seemed destined to continue except for those with the courage to flee their fatally poisonous traditional beliefs.
