In Techine's nuance-sensitive Aids drama, the characters feel as real as they are multi-faceted - but they are rarely engaging.

An unusual but refreshingly straightforward film that sensitively shows how the beginning of the AIDS epidemic affects a group of connected friends. Beautifully filmed, the screenplay keeps things relatively pared back and serves the actors well - the power and intensity comes from the terrific performances instead of artificial melodrama. An intelligent and adult film.

The Witnesses may be schematic, but it lets each character live and breathe. The film captures a time and place that seems very distant now.

A married couple, the wife's gay friend and the husband's gay lover witness the first outbreak of HIV in Paris. The performances are strong and the film is subtley optimistic- but in a way the film is almost too easy. The remaining "survivors" are shown choosing life but really why wouldn't they? How the epidemic has affected them is kept too opaque. The normal French air of detachment is only a hindrance here- keeping the film from becoming an affecting portrait that it should be.
