Stellar film from the underrated Andre Techine focuses on the early days of the AIDS virus in 1980s Paris. Strong performances highlight this excellent film along with Techine's typically effortless natural style.

The Witnesses forms a magnificent trilogy with "Son Frère" (2003), Patrice Chéreau's devastating account of fraternal devotion in the face of death, and the amazing, acerbic "Before I Forget," a brooding and bitter tale of survival coming soon from Jacques Nolot, here lending an iconic cameo as the proprietor of Manu's hooker hotel.

An unusual but refreshingly straightforward film that sensitively shows how the beginning of the AIDS epidemic affects a group of connected friends. Beautifully filmed, the screenplay keeps things relatively pared back and serves the actors well - the power and intensity comes from the terrific performances instead of artificial melodrama. An intelligent and adult film.

This was a good movie, not great .. but it portayed the time well .. although I was in the US and not Paris. But what was up with the guy in the end who was from New York- what kind of accent was that? And is Julie Depardieu really an opera singer?

Tricia Olszewski 13 Mar 2008

The explosion of AIDS is the film's sobering heart, but the manner in which it affects those who witness it makes the story universal and, through each person's small, life-affirming reactions, hopeful.
