The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (2009)

In 2007 the legendary American duo White Stripes toured Canada. Besides playing the usual venues they challenged themselves and played in buses, cafés and for Indian tribal elders. Music video director Emmett Malloy followed the band and managed to capture both the special tour, extraordinary concert versions of the band's minimalist, raw, blues-inspired rock songs and the special relationship between the extroverted Jack White and the introspective Meg White - a formerly married couple who for a long time claimed to be siblings. The film makes striking use of the band's concert colors: red, white and black.

Haters will write this off as calculate image engineering, but who has time for haters anyway? Jack and Meg White embody true rock n roll and are everything a rock band should be, even if they are a duo and not a band. This documentary follows them on a journey accross Canada, playing everywhere from parks to bowling alleys to buses. Constantly reaching out to their fanbase, they present themselves as being about sharing their music instead of generating cash for the industry machine. Great introduction for the uninitated as well as a must for the hardcore fan. Music scenes are as great as we have come to expect although "My Doorbell" was a notable omission. Bravo!

I wanted to watch this because, while The White Stripes isn't my absolute favourite band, I generally find the things that they say fascinating (in 'Coffee and Cigarettes' and 'Its Gonna Get Loud', for instance). But there wasn't enough talking here. And that that there was didn't seem terribly new.

I'm not a big fan of tour movies, but this was excellent. Reminds you just how great a live band the White Stripes are. It's good to hear the thinking behind the band too, especially how they purposely restrict themselves.

Great music in a fun and energetic presentation, capturing all the appeal of the inimitable White Stripes, that small bastion of lean, jaunty, wonderful rock music. The documentary shows some interesting choices -- first the crowd-pleasing new songs and then a more eclectic mix across the whole catalog; a handful of entire songs stabilizing a few strings of short clips; and a brave organization of physical touring/performance with more introspective, random pieces -- but it's still a while till there's anything like a real revelatory statement, and that delay could be a killer. It also ends on a stark, inscrutable note of sadness, seeming to make a strange yelp of austerity, which might be a disingenuous and off-key way to close.

Probably one the best and most interesting concert films I've seen. Loved it.
