It's the beginning of the WWII. South of France. Patricia, 18, is the oldest daughter of a well-digger, Pascal, who considers her a princess because of her moral qualities. She's kind, devoted. One day, she briefly meets a young man, Jacques, the son of Mazel, owner of the shop where her father buy his material. He's handsome and teasing. Her father's friend, Felipe, would love to marry her, and he invites her to an aviation show. She accepts his invitation only because she knows Jacques is a pilot and will be there. Soon, she'll carry his child, and he'll be gone, and the family will have to deal with this out-of-wedlock pregnancy...

Best of all "Daughter" marks a return to old-school French moviemaking, the kind of classically well-made endeavor that unrolls before us like a beloved tapestry. This is the kind of film they don't make anymore, only here it is.

Donâ(TM)t expect anything groundbreaking here - but. Daniel Auteuilâ(TM)s directorial debut is just consummately competent in this tale of Provencal life and family around the outbreak of the Second World War in which he plays a Provencal rustic (unlike in his previous Provencal roles in the Jean de Florette diptych, he sports his own nose). Beautiful and often predictable, a period comedy with lots of â~Aaaahâ(TM) bits, I enjoyed this in a cinema which was entirely full â" a rarity for a French language film in an English provincial cinema. OK, when I got to the cinema I met my friend Mark who asked what I had come to see (Borderlines Film Festival time). I said, âer, itâ(TM)s a bit embarrassing but, ok, The Well-diggerâ(TM)s Daughterâ?. But hell, it was gorgeous, totally enjoyable, and Iâ(TM)m sorry that you hadnâ(TM)t been able to get a ticket Mark.

A study in manners, logic and parenthood - quite apart from being a beautifully constructed movie. The characters are allowed to develop and the viewer gets to know them, forms his own relationships. The morals of a past generation are studied and hypocrisy exposed, all in a quintessentially french way. A beauty - I must see the Chabrol original

A slice of rural French life and its morals and values, which are rudely interrupted and changed forever by war. Beautifully shot, great character actors, a very enjoyable couple of hours.
