The War on Democracy (2007)

Set both in Latin America and the United States, the film explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Pilger says that the film "...tells a universal story... analysing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called "war on terror". According to Pilger, the film's message is that the greed and power of empire is not invincible and that people power is always the "seed beneath the snow".

The USA has been involved in overthrowing 50 presidents in 30 South American counties since 1945. Most of them were democracies. By telling the stories about the countries that were trying to give the wealth of the country to the people instead of to the USA you can see a pattern that is repeating itself over and over again. Because the new ideas of the country does not coincide with the ideas of the USA the government is usually overthrown with direct or indirect support of the USA. Later a USA-friendly dictator takes the power and give the wealth of the country back to the USA. You get to see interviews with people from the CIA where they try to explain why it was necessary to sacrifice a couple of counties so that the USA can keep the areas of interests. You get to here stuff that is so sad that it is almost funny. Like an interview with a woman from the US living in Chile : I donâ??t think anyone is tortured in this country. Why should you torture someone when you can shoot him instead. This was a real eye opener for me. You should go and see it.

Very good documentary from a very talented journalist. The film powerfully documents how the US cannot leave Latin America alone and in trying to "bring democracy" to those countries, how it turned them into totalitarian regimes with devastating human costs. I would highly recommend the film even just for the closing narrative alone. Unfortunately, the film had very little media coverage, and thus is not popularly known. If you want something out of the ordinary, go for it.

An interesting account of the attempts to grow democracy in South American which have consequently been trampled by US aggression. It is biased, and all the rest of it, but the bias is not important to the key message.
