The Two Jakes (1990)

Real estate developer Jake Berman hires private investigator and war veteran Jake Gittes for some run-of-the-mill matrimonial work. After Berman shoots his wife's lover, who happens to be his business partner, Gittes is drawn into a web of conspiracy and deceit involving the oil reserves beneath Los Angeles. While investigating, Gittes hears a voice from his past that causes him to revisit a traumatic case in Chinatown.

As a sequel to one of the best films of the '70's, The Two Jakes fails to re-capture any of the feel of Chinatown, although it tried real hard. The story was way too convoluted for a two hour film. Some terrible overacting from a couple of key players made it almost laughable at times. Nicholson is good, but it makes sense that this was his last directing credit.

After a riveting opening act, this movie de-rails quickly with it's poor storytelling (Nicholson is a great actor, but his directing skills are questionable) and performances where the actors sleepwalk through their roles.

Not as polished as last time, this sequel to 'Chinatown' isn't as sleek, slick and sexy. This is down to a less focused and often convoluted script that can make first viewings trudgesome. However, we still have solid performances from another Grade A cast, as well as some excellent cinematography that still bears the same great use of colour as its predecessor.

Hard to watch, but I want to watch it again after I watch "Chiatown".
