The Tree (2010)

The O'Neills lived happily in their house in the Australian countryside. That was until one day fate struck blindly, taking the life of Peter, the father, leaving his grief-stricken wife Dawn alone with their four children. Among them, eight-year-old Simone denies this reality. She is persuaded that her father still lives in the giant fig tree growing near their house and speaks to her through its leaves. But the tree becomes more and more invasive and threatens the house. It must be felled. Of course, Simone won't allow it.

The actors do their best with some lazy writing and child characters written as unconvincing kidults. Nowhere near the magic promised by the premise.

Combining simple family drama with hints of understated magical realism, the feature's arboreal metaphor is a bit too crude and vague to offer anything profound.

The Tree might have suffered from too much symbolism if not for writer-director Julie Bertuccelli's deft touch and Gainsbourg's appealing performance.

It's an old rule that movies about the supernatural have to be scary. If they're not, there's a tendency the audience get sleepy or laughs at the wrong sensitive moments. That's not the biggest problem with The Tree however. It starts with a family father in Australia, dying from a heart attack. His spirit moves into a tree and both his daughter and his widow can talk to him. The tree even gets jealous when the widow, good acting as usual from Charlotte Gainsbourg by the way, meets a new man. It takes a hurricane to give release and to put things right. This could have been more interesting if it had kept to the conflict between a mother finding a new man and her childrens' dislike. There's no need for spirits in trees and they are no good substitute for real living people.

Yes, the idea that the tree/father is literally tearing this family apart is way too blunt, but Gainsbourg and Davies sell it by playing the scenes naturally, with minimal histrionics.
