The Thing About My Folks (2005)

Ben's dad Sam shows up one night with a note from Ben's mother (Sam's wife of 46 years), that she has left. While Ben's wife and his three sisters try to find her, Ben takes Sam on a day trip to see a farmhouse that's for sale. The day trip turns into a road trip while dad and son explore their past, their relationship, and why Sam's wife might have left him. The road trip includes fishing, drinking, playing pool, sleeping under the stars, and frank discussion. Anger simmers close at hand, as do love and hope. Where Sam's wife is - and why she left - leads to the movie's resolution.

It's the same old, same old - except with some really snappy one-liners.

Raymond De Felitta's directing is straightforward, tactful, lyrical where necessary and never mawkish, and though Reiser's script offers no grand insights, it's full of sharply observed and funny detail.

Those who like classic coming of age films will love this one but those who are jaded and bitter will hate it. The over 30 crowd will love it.

Director Raymond de Felitta, who directed a little-seen gem called "Two Family House" a few years ago, gives Falk plenty of room to do his thing. There's an underlying emotional truth even in scenes that seem terribly contrived.

"The Thing About," though a bit drawn out in the middle, and laced with cute notes like Faulk's uncontrolled farting, was extremely real for me. It had some provocative turns in Reiser's and Faulk's preconceptions about the Folk's marriage relationship. My own attempt to bond with my father in his last years despite the horrible years of growing up and feeling the fallout from my parents' marriage. I loved this movie while my friend thought it schmaltzy. It either resonates or it doesn't.
