[Luara] Dern gives a powerhouse performance as a strong-willed woman who has to reexamine her life. Child actress Isabelle Nélisse plays 13-year-old Jennifer with a maturity that's astounding to watch.

Not since "Mysterious Skin" has a film so tenderly explored the psychological effects of sexual abuse on children as they develop into adults around the minefields of their own coping mechanisms. The fact that the film is autobiographical grants it additional layers of intimacy, empathy, and strength.

Its distinctive structural style, with narration that weaves in and out of flashback, is intriguing, and strong performances, especially from Ms. Debicki and Ms. Nélisse, bolster moments of overly pat dialogue. This is a good movie, but part of me wishes I hadn’t seen it.

Dern has never been better than she is here in this film. It's a stunning achievement, made all the more powerful by the fact that she's interpreting the filmmaker's worst moments in life.

I saw this film at the Sundance Film Festival and not surprising it received a 100% rating. It is one of the most brilliantly told and edited films I have ever seen. Be prepared though, it is not an easy one to watch. It is a film a child sexual assault. Congratulation to Jennifer Fox for her bravery and her brilliance.
