Interesting and sometimes abstract samurai film. Entertaining anti-hero stuff.

Kurosawa, this ain't. I would consider myself a junkie for samurai movies, and this one lives up to the hype. It doesn't have a strong story, like say Yojimbo or Rashomon, nor the playful and effective humor of, say, Seven Samurai. This movie is straight up vicious. Nakadai delivers an excellent performance as a troubled samurai, whose frozen and intense stare speaks louder than his words. (THE GUY NEVER BLINKS!!!) But what this movie lacks in story and resolution, it makes up for in blood-spatter, instituted earlier in Sanjuro, and a very, very high body count, one which puts Kill Bill Vol. 1 to shame.

Way to take such an overused movie formula, the whole revenge plot, and lead us to right before the final battle only to go off into another tangent at the very end. Hell, yeah, will I sit there and watch ten minutes of nothing but killing. Not only was it unexpected, but it was fresh and new. Bravo. Go Mifune, too. WOOT WOOT.
