THUMBS UP Viewed this on 16/12/15 This masterpiece Samurai film puts all the Kurosawa films to shame thanks in large parts to it's engrossing direction, pacing, superior acting (especially from one of the best antihero of all time), it's unbelievably beautiful and haunting violence and a sensible story. I have never seen a B/W film with such technical excellence, take for instance the showdown in the snow with Toshiro Mifune or it's famous brutally violent climax with 8 minutes of nonstop violence. This is a criminally ignored work of a vastly underrated director whose efficiency can be seen in how effectively he makes Toshiro Mifune act in a controlled and respectable manner and compare it with the overacting in Rashamon as well as Seven Samurai.

Of all the samuri films I've come across, this is the best. A wonderful tribute to the ancient samuri art. I'm by no means an expert on that subject, but I do watch a lot of movies. The combination of Nakadai/Okamoto in this movie is hard to match. Even Kurosawa would have a hard time beating this. Brilliant cinematography and beautiful scenery help pull this dark, twisted tale together. Toshiro Mifune's best go at acting yet. Which is saying a lot. I really liked this film a lot. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys early japanese film.

Nakadai was menacing, entrancing, and the reason that many of the scenes worked. The story (which, according to an IMDB comment, is from a Japanese tome) was complex- this helped to elevate the movie above that of a cliched plot but also got confusing towards the end (esp as some sub-plots were apparently to be picked up again in the sequel).

Yes. This is -the- most sinister movie in Samurai cinema. And who better to play the most badass character in jidaigeki than Tatsuya Nakadai? Toshiro Mifune has a lesser role as well, but unfortunately their fight never happens. Many Shinsengumi were brutalized during the making of this film.
