A nice slow riddle that poses many questions and refuses to answer any of them. Bates is excellent as always.

If you like off-beat movies, this is one for you. It shows its age at times, but the acting is good, with Alan Bates at his charismatic best.

a shout so loud it can kill a man (and a few sheep) doesn't disappoint, despite the preposterous nature of the conceit. every sound man should see it.

Alan Bates bending over and rolling back up to take a breath is probably the most brilliant moment of preparation I've ever seen. Every actor should watch it. An astonishing film. (PS read the story by Robert Graves too -- and enjoy the differences.)
