Another under-seen effort from producer Val Lewton. This is a particularly dark and complex mystery that benefits from Lewton's characteristic emphasis on crafting a strong story, complete with intriguing personalities and atmosphere to spare.

Kim Hunter (in her film debut) stars as a young woman who goes to New York to search for her missing Sister. Once there she crosses paths with Satanists in this haunting, melancholic and downright disturbing masterpiece from producer Val Lewton's chiller series. This for me is the very best of the Lewton films and it contains some of the most powerful and creepy scenes in all of cinema. How on earth did something this inventive and daring slip through at the height of the Hollywood studio period?

This is so boring I nearly fell asleep, and the "Lord's prayer" speech at the end makes this the brainless equivalent of a chick tract on film. Luckily, it's barely 70 minutes long.

A strong horror film from RKO and Val Lewton that takes the viewer down the increasingly creepy and unpredictable path of its despondent, mysterious heroine. The chilling direction and smart cinematography are fantastic. Prime candidate for a modern remake! Although it needs to be done right...

The eeriness abounds in another of Val Lewtonâ??s classic fright flicks. This one highlights many of the things one comes to expect from such features. Naive young people stumbling into sinisterly clutches that seek to perpetuate some mind scarring evil. However, it does all this through mood rather than out and out gore or flinch inducing scare tactics. There is a quality to the film that feels as if more could have been done, but that is not to say anything really detracts from the viewing pleasure.
