One of my favorite Val Lewton productions. A beautiful mystery movie about a young girl looking for her missing elder sister that finds out about a satanic secret society among the rich people of New York. Ahead of its time indeed.

Although it has a cheesy wet-behind-the-ears young girl in big city frame around it, this film is really about dread and angst. How can one cope with life? Is knowing that you can end it really the key to committing to it in a serious way? What solace would the left-hand path offer? Val Lewton conjures up Sartre in the shadows.

I made it through half of this one and then apparently fell asleep against my will. Definitely another great from TCM's Lewton marathon last night and I really want to finish it. *note, I woke up in time to catch Robert Wise's Mademoiselle Fifi (also produced by Lewton) this morning and I didn't really care to finish it.
