Pistelias draama Englannin luokkayhteiskunnasta, jossa nuorehko ylaluokan poikamies palkkaa itselleen liiankin taitavan miespalvelijan. Kaksinaismoraalia ja rappioelamaa film noirin hengessa. Hyvin naytelty, upeasti kuvattu.

Dicevano che era un film sulla dialettica servo-padrone hegeliana. Ma il film di Losey tratta anche altro: complesso edipico, conflitto 'working-class' con la 'upper-class' e puo' essere letto anche come adattamento in chiave moderna del Faust; in questo caso il servo, splendidamente interpretato da Bogarde, Ã¨ Mefisto. Il padrone regredisce a una condizione infantile, infine verso l'autodistruzione. Sublime.

This film excels in creating unpleasant situations. Everyone is using everyone else and there's a lot of pain to go around. I was impressed with the intelligence with which the story unfolds. It takes us to unpleasant places, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have a look.
