Let's play master and servant! A subtly twisted trademark Pinter screenplay. Collaboration with Joseph Losey for direction. Bogarde in a polished, sinister, homoerotic role. Film making doesn't get much better than this.

like all "classical" british films it takes many cues from theatre. this made it very good, but mostly not magnificent. an interesting look at what drives people. it was fun to see how servant not only became master, but drained him of his essence. cinematography is so great! i love how actors are placed in the screen, costume, and basically all the mise-en-scene. losey is a great filmmaker and bogarde is an amazing actor.

My very favourite of all Dirk's films. Cast against type with a brilliant Pinter script and outstanding direction by the much underrated Losey.

Games of moral corruption, sexual appetites, blackmail, social class scaling, subjugation and conformism; to a certain extent all tabu themes of its time period, explored with subtle elegance and perfectly drawn tension. Hypnotic use of angles and lightning. powerful dramatic performances.
