Like "the Best Years of Our Lives," this film follows the aftermath of WWII with an emotional appeal, but it follows those who have suffered through the horrors of the concentration camps in Germany. What I found incredibly significant of this film is followed the lives of a boy and his mother, who were from Czechoslovakia. Usually, we hear about the victims being mainly Hebrew, and yes, they made reference to them being sent to the Palestine. For once, there was the issue concerning another group of people being abused by the Nazi's. Fine performances from Montgomery Clift and the rest of the cast. Another film overlooked by the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list and many other critics, excluding Bosley Crowther. It seems so unpopular. Very, very good.

85/100. This is such an excellent and moving drama. In one of Montgomery Clift's earliest roles, he displays his great gift for acting. He is very well cast. Aline MacMahon delivers a very well thought out performance. The key to the importance of this film is the realistic approach it takes to the subject matter. It is very believably done. Wonderful cinematography. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, screenplay, director Fred Zinnemann and Clift for best actor. It won for motion picture story. Beautifully done.

normally, when the new york times and only the NYT puts a film intheir top 1000 of all time list its a pretty crappy film but in this rare case, the NYT actually found a real hidden gem. a suprisingly realistic and heartfelt drama with a great performance from clift definetely should bump into the upper echelon of film history

Both a well-modulated immersion in the experience of stunned and stranded children and a time-capsule of the scarred land and crumbled cityscapes of Germany after the war.

Karel Malik is Czech boy who has survived the holocaust. He is all alone and runs away from a refugee center. He meets an American G.I., who befriends him. What he doesn't know is that his mother is also still alive, searching all over Europe to find him. I'm surprised The Search isn't more famous, for I find it one of the best films about post-WWI Germany I've ever seen. Ivan Jandl, who plays Karel, a boy that almost never talks and has forgotten everything about his life except the concentratiancamps he was in after he was separated from his mother, gives a performance I've never seen a child give. So young of age, and then such strong acting! Montgomery Clift is also terrific, as the person who puts back his faith in human kind. Definitely worth a watch, but you may have a hard time finding it; I guess that if it hadn't been for the Belgium television (they broadcasted it), I wouldn't have known about this jewel for quite a while.
