Gus Van Sant prove once again his talent in this film. Despite a few cliches, The Sea of Trees is a beautiful, intelligent and fascinating movie.

Watched the movie Sea of Trees, with Matthew McConaughey. Reviews by critics were awful... regular folks thought it was fair. I thought it was quite good. Acting was excellent. Lotsa flashbacks but all relevant to his search for meaning near Mt Fuji, Japan. Deep in grief, he seeks answers... and finds them. Worth the cost of admission at Redbox!

This risibly long-winded drama is perhaps above all a profound cultural insult, milking the lush green scenery of Japan’s famous Aokigahara forest for all it’s worth, while giving co-lead Ken Watanabe little to do other than moan in agony, mutter cryptically, and generally try to act as though McConaughey’s every word isn’t boring him (pardon the expression) to death.

Somewhere along the way this film tripped over itself and feel into the clique and boring section, yet its ideals portrayed still make for meaningful viewing.

The main setting in the film was compelling as a ploy of garnering interest to see how it gets treated and told in a cinematic style. The result is rather conflicted based on credibility, both naturally and emotionally, while the decently-performed human soul is meaningful though melodramatic and convoluting when the twist gets reached.
