The Saint Strikes Back (1939)

Suave private detective Simon "The Saint" Templar arrives in San Francisco and meets Val, a woman whose police inspector father killed himself after being accused of corruption and dismissed from the force. Convinced of the man's innocence, Templar takes it upon himself to vindicate the memory of Val's father. To do so he must take on the city's most dangerous criminal gang, while also battling hostile members of the police department.

Above average saint thriller. The saint helps a pretty young lady prove her innocence of shooting a man at a new years eve party!

not a bad 'spy' thriller for it's time. The role George Sanders was born for!

The sardonic, sophisticated George Sanders replaces Louis Hayward in the title role and would continue with the franchise until Hayward returned to wrap up the Hollywood series. The plot is nearly unfathomable, burdened by too many criminal characters and subplots. But the film gets by on Sanders' charm and wit. Keep an eye out for Neil Hamilton as you may recognize him as police chief Gordon from the campy 1960s "Batman" series. Barry Fitzgerald, one of the most beloved character actors of Hollywood's golden age, shows up as a burglar who is turned by Sanders.
