Guy Maddin is a genius. Pulling off a film like this in 2004 is pretty amazing. The acting was great and the story was absolutely brilliant.

What I love most about Guy Madin films is his ability to create large worlds that seem tiny. This film is set in the city of Winnipeg, but we are given a sense that Winnipeg could be contained, entirely, within a single room. Madin achieves this by using grainy film-stock, Dr. Caligarian, expressionistic sets, and deliberate green-screens. I adore the staticy, cozy claustrophobia, especially in this film as it creates a sense of Winnipeg being isolated from the rest of the world - as self contained, fuzzy sort of dream land burried under ten feet of snow. This is also a very funny dark comedy and sees Madin at his best - juxtaposing blatant humour with encompassing trauma and meloncholie.

there seems to be a recent trend in cinema to create films that imitate the style of classic cinema. with sin city and the good german reviving noir cinema, and kill bill and grindhouse reveling in 70s film-making. in the saddest music we find something oddly refreshing. the film is shot using poor quality film and aims to look as though it was produced in the golden age of movies. what is wonderful about this though is that it takes the genre and translates it into surrealist cinema, creating a dizzying and amusing tale that is not only visually interesting but is highly satirical. the plot revolves around a saddest music contest with the end game being to sell more beer, criticizing the capitalist system for making profit out of misery. beautiful, funny and absurd. go see it now!
