Apart from a certain implausibility in the film's initial premise, this is a first-rate entertainment that captures Le Carre's jaundiced if morally sensitive vision with a great deal of care and feeling.

The plot is an interesting combination of espionage and romance, and it benefits from a great score and some beautiful locations, but it is just too bad that it is made into such an extremely dull affair in which the romance seems forced and the espionage is tedious to death.

The Russia House is probably my favourite espionage movie. It has a nice combination of professional and amateur spies so it isn't as formulaic as many espionage thrillers. I would describe this as a spy drama rather than as a spy thriller. The pacing is just the way I like it, slow enough that one can feel the ambience of the setting but quick enough to keep one interested. It's a lot like 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' in that respect. Great soundtrack, interesting characters played by talented actors.
