More than a espionage thriller or a romantic flick. This film has mood. It works in our memories as if we had been there and done that. Sean Connery's character describes himself as "a large, unmade bed" .

I cannot rate this movie objectively because I love it! Very subtle...between the lines...Connery and Pfeiffer are wonderful...and the true star of the movie is the Moscow of the late eighties which is beautifully captured. It makes you feel like you're there and I don't know how it does it.

Most John Le Carre' books don't translate well onto film...this one got it right...your country or your lover? Espionage and romance...

The film is notable in its amazing photography of Soviet-era Russia, but little else. Pfeiffer's attempt at a Russian accent is laughable and the drama moves quite slowly with no real sense of tension.
