Not your usual take on the spy thriller, this film employs the Hitchcock technique of a Macguffin. Seemingly about spies and their espionage the story really revolves around the love between Connery and Pfeiffer. In fact I feel the direction follows the Hitchcock style very well. There are many shots that resemble Hitch's style and the overall cinematography is great. Their are thematic elements that resonate throughout the film much like Hitch would follow. The performances by Connery and Pfeiffer are great. The only knock is that the pacing is rather slow but often that is refreshing to see. Great film.

The notion that a beyond middle -aged writer could shake off the disillusion of old age, stand up for principle and find romance is inviting. The sound track is haunting yet romantic. Although it is clearly dated, it's a film worth revisiting.

If I had to judge the overall film, I would say it´s a 2.5 stars, because most of the film it has a slow rhytm and you feel it is a too often seen story. However, the ironic sense of humour, the subtile intelligence, the british style of this John Le-Carré story, and more important, the strong conclussions of the end (not by obvious, less important, and expressed in a way they seem new), make it 3 stars worth. Of course, fantastic Sean Connery, who is the rock on which the movie is builded.

Despite some smart, brittle dialogue and the classy cast, this seldom rises above the routine and is basically a bittired and terribly 60's.

Very deliberate (which means slow, but in a good way...), mature study of an older man changing his life. Pfieffer perhaps a bit young for her role, but the rest of the cast and Jerry Goldsmith's great score make up for it.
