Nair likes to have fun even when her material is somber, and for this movie she deploys a rich palette and a multi-culti but mostly kitsch-free score that fuses old and new with a lovely Sufi devotional piece, and is peppered with Pakistani pop.

Kelly Jane Torrance 18 Dec 2018

A film like this stands or falls on the performance of its lead, and the young British actor Riz Ahmed doesn't disappoint.

Cris Kennedy 30 May 2016

There is a lot of plot to get through, and Nair employs some interesting visual devices to help sweep us through the morass of characters and history as she tackles big themes in a complex layer of issues.

Al Alexander 12 May 2013

Aside from the lead-pipe moralizing, Mira Nair's timely and important film is an eye-opening parable about identity and how it relates to the War on Terror.

A beautiful movie that I wish more would see. Life is not black and white but shades of gray the forces that would have you view through a black and white lens are those who create that which they seek to oppose.
