The Reckoning (2021)

In the aftermath of the Great Plague and amidst the subsequent witch-hunts against women, a young widow grapples with the tragic death of her husband in a society completely consumed by fear and death. Because she rejects the advances of her landlord, she is falsely accused of being a witch and thrown in jail for a crime she didn't commit. She must endure physical persecution at the hands of England's most ruthless witch-hunter and face her own inner demons as the devil himself starts to work his way into her mind.

The ensemble cast members all dutifully perform their roles, but there’s not much for them to sink their teeth into.

You can’t deny its visual panache via immersive cinematography and production design. That it never embraces the supernatural element it teases is disappointing, but far from a dealbreaker.

Unfortunately, The Reckoning is the biggest whiff in Marshall’s filmography. At its best, it delivers moments of optic greatness (a lightning strike-illuminating barn scene stands out), but most of the film is bleak and droll, full of a muddled script and lackluster performances.

Poor acting. No one is believable. After watching British Crime series (In the line of Duty), I could not stomach this.

Director Neil Marshall is back with #TheReckoning, a lurid tale of disease, devils and witch trials. While 'The Descent' remains my favorite of his work, nonetheless I enjoyed Marshall's latest effort. My review: https://youtu.
