The Queen of Versailles (2012)

With the epic dimensions of a Shakespearean tragedy, The Queen of Versailles follows billionaires Jackie and David's rags-to-riches story to uncover the innate virtues and flaws of their American dream. We open on the triumphant construction of the biggest house in America, a sprawling, 90,000-square-foot mansion inspired by Versailles. Since a booming time-share business built on the real-estate bubble is financing it, the economic crisis brings progress to a halt and seals the fate of its owners. We witness the impact of this turn of fortune over the next two years in a riveting film fraught with delusion, denial, and self-effacing humor.

The pride, gluttony and inexplicable romance in the tale are almost Shakespearean.

[E]nds up an ever less slightly ungenerous look at the .01 percent than it might have been... But this is still a brutal film from many angles.

Engaging picture of a class of people so hopelessly out of touch and far gone that they can do nothing to stop their free-fall. A sickening portrait full of delusions of grandeur, one that you can't stop watching. Why is it again that people hate America?

Like a Theodore Dreiser novel for our time, infused with the vivid, vulgar spirit of reality TV. It often had the sold-out Eccles Center howling, but also has elements of profound tragedy and allegory.

It is astonishing that this movie exists. It didn't strike me until I saw it a second time what a priceless artifact it is.
