The Producers (1968)

A conniving Broadway producer and his meek accountant plan to profit from charming wealthy old biddies to invest in an overbudget production, and then put on a sure-fire disaster, so nobody will ask for their money back — and what's more disastrous than a tasteless musical celebrating Adolf Hitler.

I could go on for days about how funny and clever this film is. Even just remembering scenes for this review makes me start laughing out loud. PLEASE do not judge this by the re-make. The original is amazing, and the chemistry between these guys is almost unbeatable.

This is a hilarious movie. Gene Wilder is alternately sweet and psychotic. The flop musical that turns out to be a hit is so politically incorrect that it's hysterical. I really just love listening to all the dialogue in this movie.

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO REMAKE THE TEMPLATE OF THE MODERN SCREWBALL COMEDY???

I liked the musical better, but this is the original and it is superb. It has aged like a very fine wine. You must enjoy it some time.

My favorite Mel Brooks film (although Young Frankenstein runs a close second). The script is hilarious, but it's the actors that really make this movie a classic. The two leads are brilliant (Gene Wilder is over the top, but more in a much more subtle way than Matthew Broderick in the remake, if that makes any sense), and it's hard to decide which of the supporting characters are the best (I switch between Roger DeBris and Franz Liebkind with every viewing). "Springtime for Hitler" gives new meaning to the word "showstopper." Improves on every viewing.
