In this darkly romantic ghost story, a woman travels to an isolated cabin where she is stalked by an apparition who inhabits her space as his own. With the unexpected arrival of the woman's boyfriend, the dark spirit's haunting grows obsessive. Soon the woman begins to exhibit weirdly irrational behavior as the thin line between sanity and possession begins to unravel. Is she battling her inner demons, or is a much darker presence threatening them all?

I can understand people not liking it but to call such a beautifully crafted movie awful makes no sense to me. This is one of the more original movies I've ever seen, I loved it. It builds slow but that is part of what gets under your skin. Clearly they were going for something different and it sure worked for me. And my two friends with whom I watched it. The acting is terrific as well. I guess if people are expecting some kind of horror movie they'd be disappointed. Or if they don't want to think. The movie definitely leaves a lot to the viewer to decipher and figure out, but that is one of the huge positives to me! Check it out and give it a chance. It scared me and moved me at the end.

I caught this last week at the Dallas Film Festival and was blown away. It is a very different movie, highly original. The first 30 minutes, for instance, has virtually no dialogue. There are no special effects, there is no gore... just a quiet, creepy building dread that really pays off if you are willing to think. The director, who did a Q&A after the screening, said Polanski and 'Rosemary's Baby' were a big influence and I felt that was apparent. Don't see it if you are expecting horror but if you want a movie that tries to do something different and really succeeds, this is one for you. The acting is top notch and the cinematography and score also are excellent.

I watch a movie like this, and I keep waiting for something interesting to happen -- and it never does, and then it dawns on me: I'm supposed to find what's actually happening interesting. Sorry, movie. Not this time.

Strangely the spiritual sister to "Beyond" that I just watched. Another gorgeous looking thriller... That's slow, dull, and uninteresting. But unlike "Beyond" an interesting storyline does pop up exactly halfway through when a malicious ghost shows up to challenge the existing Presence. Unfortunately, the storyline is still played awfully tedious. I read some of these other user reviews and I am at a loss how they didn't understand the ending. It is more than on the nose. Spoiler Alert: The dark spirit is a guardian spirit who helps The Presence move on and tears the malicious spirit apart. The spirit on the boat is the boatman's spirit that brought him to the island. I see him as a good spirit, you may take a pessimistic view that it is another malicious spirit that will do harm to the two humans. But the whole taking Shane West into Heaven thing was so uninspired...

Very bizarre, but good movie. Slow at times, not as scary as the synopsis would make it be, but still worth watching.
