I went to the LA Premiere of the Pool Boys last night. The audience laughed the whole way through!!! Matthew Lillard and his sharp witty comedy was nicely offset by Tom Arnold's broad humor (playing a tabloid version of himself). Add Rachelle Lefevre with her intelligent charm and a wonderful cameo by George Takai and you get a very enjoyable film! Its an added benefit there were numerous Playboy Bunnies running around topless!!!

Matthew Lillard plays a ne'er-do-well who has been feeding his family stories of success, so when his cousin turns up hoping for a job opportunity, things get silly quickly as they find themselves living in one of the mansions where Lillard works as a pool boy, and running a string of prostitutes. Y'know, like you do. It's pretty harmless, but it's also fairly boring, save for a few good jokes and some nice nudity to keep it from losing you entirely. Rental? At best?

The Pool Boys flew under the radar, but I am glad i picked it up for my viewing pleasure. Lillard, who has always been one of my favorites, gives an excellent performance, and the rest of the supporting cast compliments him quite well. The story is completely improbable and for that I am knocking it down a bit. It is far from the greatest comedy ever made, but you can tell the guys who did American Pie were behind it. Characters, as mentioned above, were well developed and the soundtrack was unbelievable. If you are expecting a comedy as good as the first two American Pie's you'll come away disappointed, but if you go in with a clean plate it is easy to enjoy.
