When I teach film theory, I'm gonna show this movie for Psychoanalytic week.

This is one of the most interactive and engaging works in cinematic theory that I have ever seen. As a viewer interested in theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, the ways in which Sophie Fiennes and Slavoj Zizek present material which is normally inaccessible in a creative way makes for an intellectually stimulating work. I would suggest this movie both outside and inside the classroom, but the viewers should know that some of the ideas presented are somewhat difficult to follow on a first-time view; but similarly, this movie is not for those who consider pieces such as '50 First Dates' or 'Pretty Woman' intellectually engaging cinema. Hitchcock, Lynch, Kieslowski, and works by other renowned directors are discussed and enjoyed. Four stars from me.

Here, we see Zizek do a brilliant psychoanalytic breakdown of the classics and contemporary hits of cinema to make the shocking and yet convincing claim that reality is a reflection of cinema, not the other way around.

Slavoj Zizek brings his study of philosophy and psychoanalysis to bear on some of the great masterworks of film, examining them for hidden and not-so-hidden symbolism. This is strictly for those who like to do more than mindlessly watch movies. This is an exercise in dissection and, sometimes, in self-projection. Zizek reminds us of the importance of context and of viewing productions from a social perspective. It's arguable that the information presented here may not be completely accurate. Film, like any other visual media, is subject to interpretation and debate. Still, this is compelling stuff. Very educational.

While this is fun, it's hardly sprocket science.
