A very strong character driven movie. The cinematography and blocking involved with the pawnshop scene was very smooth and well choreographed.

It's Rod Steiger's performance that makes this a favorite. He plays a concentration camp survivor struggling with internal conflict in a New York ghetto environment, and the climactic scene is painfully unforgettable.

It's such a compelling film because it's so credible. Steiger's performance is one of the best i've seen.

Bleak, realistic and certainly not a cheery feel good movie. But it is very compelling. Superbly directed by Sidney Lumet. The entire cast is great, but Rod Steiger's performance is absolutely brilliant. How Lee marvin won the Oscar for Cat Ballou over Steiger's performance is one of those Academy Award bizarre mistakes. Nice black and white photography, excellent writing and very well edited.

The Pawnbroker is haunting and dramatic film, brilliantly leaded by Rod Steiger's towering performance as Sol Nazerman, a Jewish who survived imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp, still being haunted by his memories.
