Remarkable...[a] most uncommon film, which projects a disagreeable subject with power and cogency.

8.0 Complex movie with complex character which bravely tackles a large number of social issues in a period before such was socially acceptabnle. Superlative acting by the lead and supporting cast especially rodrigues. Intense character analysis. Interracial relationships, nudity in film, homosexuality, materialism, post traumatic stress, and Jewish persecution in Nazi death camps. Only forthose who appreciate serious movie analysis.

An amazing film Steiger at his best, i love the way Sol Nazerman was so down to earth yet was drawn by his own moral integrity and frustration by the reality of his position. I would say easily one the best movies ever made.

2 main gripes about the film: 1. shaky supporting cast, who have some both great and hammy moments. 2. sometimes inappropriate music score, particularly at the end. That said, Steiger's performance was incredible and complex and Boris Kaufman's work was so well-crafted.
