Amazing film about Holocaust survivor guilt with a truly fantastic lead performance.

Rod Steiger plays a survivor of WW2's concentration camps who runs a pawnbroking business in New York. He is scarred by his wartime experiences and the brutal fates of his family, and the film follows him as he tries to minimise contact with those around him, all of whom regards as 'scum', even those who admire or like him. The film was groundbreaking 45 years ago; much of that seems very ordinary now, but is well worth watching.

Rod Steiger is superb in this brilliantly realized look at the dark side of the human psyche. Not a bag of laughs but well worth seeing.

Rod Steiger is amazing in this film directed by Sidney Lumet about a concentration camp survivor who works as a Pawnbroker in New York. While I could have done without parts of the storyline, such as the entire Jesus and Rodriguez storyline, Steiger is the real reason to see this film (it's crazy that just two years later he stars in In the Heat of the Night). The other actors were good, I just wish it had a better script.

Didn't like it. Had potential, but then got way too off topic and weird. Oh and the music sucked, sorry Quincy Jones, just didn't go with this movie. And no resolution...hate that.
