In a bleak Inverness midwinter, Luisaidh is careening off the rails after the suicide of her best friend. She medicates her misery with joyless sex, chips and a belief in the power of positive drinking. Tremendous directorial debut by Karen. I have to say I love all her work and a big fan since Dr. Who days. Great to see her stretch beyond her current Marvel universe. This film hits a lot of important points and she nails its, also a great supporting cast around her. I won't give away spoilers, but the plot takes a few turns I didn't expect. Incredible to watch her performance take the character emotionally and even physically downhill then to discover what she needed to live life again. This movie really needs to be seen by all teenagers to young adults. Really spoke to me, I saw it at a film festival and can't wait to see it again in theaters with my friends.....and yes I cried in a few places because of how it relates to my life. Can't wait to see Karen's next director project or screenplay!!!

Karen Gillan's directorial debut is not without issues, but still more than manages to convey the unique suffering caused by suicide. The performances were incredible from the whole cast and there was an incredibly human feeling to the whole film. My only complaint is it felt like there was more to some of the characters than what we were shown, the film is set so much is Liusaidh's head that we miss out on some of the other character's motivations and their actions are left unexplained. It could be argued that this just does more to put the viewers into Liusaidh's dazed and isolated experience of the world, but there is such a thing as too much ambiguity.

Gillan, returning to her Highlands roots to spotlight a depressingly high suicide rate there among young people, has not only given herself an expectedly meaty role that walks a fine line between sad and bitterly funny, but she’s proven to be a director with a keen eye for expressive visuals.

The direction is assured, and the script is unexpectedly both witty and moving as she tackles some sensitive topics including suicide, grief, drug abuse, rape, and the abuse of trans women.
