The Matrix is the type of film that engages your brain whilst also providing some great visceral thrills. The Wachowskis crafted one of the most unique science fiction films of all time with its engulfing premise and oddball characters with great talent from the likes of Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. There's so many motifs thrown into the story that keep you engaged and the fight scenes serve the plot finely instead of simply being there for the sake of entertaining the teen crowd. It's a shame the sequels didn't come close to matching the genius of this and descended into mindless action because this could've become one of the best franchises of our time. Nevertheless, we still have the first film which remains a great piece of cinema.

Revolutionary when released, this movie has really stood the test of time (if marred slightly by its sequels). A perfectly executed story from start to finish, which really should have ended there.

I used to think this was a bad ass movie when I first watched it, but I was sooo young to really understand it. To me at the time it just seemed like a kickass scifi action film. And now that I am older it is SO much more than that. Philosophy from all forms and angles, it is possible for anyone to enjoy this film.
