At the end of The Manxman I found myself asking, "Well, what was the point?" This movie meanders around for a couple of hours while attempting to be a sweeping romantic drama, however, in the end, it doesn't quite reach that goal. It's a bleak story with no real Hitchcock charm.

It's well directed and acted, but the melodramatic plot is made aggravating by the glacial pacing.

There is something to be said for silent acting. The exaggerated, delicate movements and extreme facial expressions can be great at conveying emotion in a stylised way. This film starts off strongly with a conflict between two friends who both are in love with the same woman. While it is a horrid cliche in terms of its story development, the acting and directing is good enough for the majority of the film. Unfortunately, the slight material starts to show its seams near the end.
