Ingmar Bergman has created a brilliant and entertaining film that examines the relationship between creator/performer and audience.

Filling in the gap for me between Wild Strawberries (a superlative to Bergman's work) and Virgin Spring, I was real excited to see this hard to get film in 35mm as a sort of goodbye to the director. This is definitely at the most exciting point in the director's career in my opinion; so I was really excited to see this smart and challenging film about magic, art, reality, and religion. My only complaint is the deus ex machina at the end, but other than that I have no complaints.

Un Bergman meno mistico e più giocoso de "Il Settimo Sigillo", ma capace di sorprendere e far riflettere sul tema dell'apparenza e sul senso del cammino della vita. Un grande Max von Sidow

Preceding his famous trilogy of faith, The Magician is Bergman's tale of an enigmatic illusionist and a rational scientist engaged in a battle of wits that serves as an examination on the art of illusion and ultimately cinema itself. He infuses the film with horror conventions that he employs to virtuoso effect and bawdy comedy that works surprisingly well, making for a truly under rated gem from a transitional and creative period in his career.

Peculiar, low key work by Ingmar Bergman following a group of unusual people, who travel the countryside, with their strange act. They are almost like a circus, since they have an odd collection of talent, but they fall short of being classified that. One day, they venture into a household in the countryside and vastly intimidate the owners of the place with their strange acts. One magician (Max von Sydow) is particularly odd, expelling magic that truly concerns them. Unique Bergman film, with interesting imagery and a good performance by Sydow. As usual, nice cinematography. It is a little too slow at times, but it still works and is memorable.
