The Madness of King George (1994)

Aging King George III of England is exhibiting signs of madness, a problem little understood in 1788. As the monarch alternates between bouts of confusion and near-violent outbursts of temper, his hapless doctors attempt the ineffectual cures of the day. Meanwhile, Queen Charlotte and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger attempt to prevent the king's political enemies, led by the Prince of Wales, from usurping the throne.

Thankfully, most of the humor here works, but on the whole, the film falls to mediocrity.

Unlike most pompous british films about the royal family, this one is enjoyable even if you aren't British. It looks at the concepts of madness (obviously) and the nature of an archaic system of goverment through both great comedic segments and powerful dramatic ones. It's also worth mentioning that Nigel Hawthorne, who I'd never heard of before, offers a dynamic, powerhouse performance, playing both the clown and the tragic lunatic. Highly recommended.

Hawthorne missed out on an Oscar for The Madness of George III and should not have: his portrayal of the king is a career best. The ﬁlm itself is fantastic: a great slice of history, fabulous costumes, expert score.
