Shot by master cinematographer Gregg Toland, this is one of John Ford's most visually expressive film, one that also features the young John Wayne in a strong performance

As he did with Fort Apache, John Ford proves here that black-and-white cinematography can be more vivid and beautiful than any color film when in the right hands. This film is just gorgeous. The score is haunting, the cinematography is incredible, and the performances from everyone are wonderful. I LOVED this film. The sense of place is staggering on the ship, and the high contrast black-and-white visuals combined with the beautifully moody score bring the feelings of isolation in the characters to the forefront. For someone who who loves the John Ford Stock Company as much as I do, this film is a gift. You've got Duke, Ward Bond, John Qualen, Thomas Mitchell, and Barry Fitzgerald stuck on a ship together for most of the film with John Ford at the helm. It's as awesome as it sounds.

John Wayne playing a Norwegian straight man in a comedy routine...the acting is kinda bad or maybe the accent just makes it worse, but somehow it manages to work.
