Hitchcock's third film is his first suspense movie, and thus the first real "Hitchcock" movie.

The serial killer The Avenger is killing young women and terrorizing London. Dashing young Ivor Novello rents a room in a rooming house, and his suspicious manner and secret trips at night lead his landlady to suspect him as the killer. He is also busy romancing a young woman who also lives in the house, who is also being courted by the police man in charge of capturing The Avenger. This is the first of Hitchcock's films that noticeably feels like his work. It features a misunderstood hero who's persecuted by the law and the public at large. The film also really demonstrates his love of silent German cinema with some striking images and sharp contrast between light and shadow.
