Intriguing and complex but not entirely satisfying, George Roy Hill's version of Le Carre's novel suffers from the weak performance (perhaps even miscasting) of Diane Keaton in the lead role.

Crammed into 130 minutes of screen time, Le Carre's story loses much of its motivation, and although there is plenty of action and suspense, often it seems that the action is happening in the wrong places to the wrong people.

Keaton's best work in this fine adaption of fave LeCarre, with a rounded view of the Israeli-Palestinian dilemna seen thru the work of the Mossad & this actresses' torn emotions. Sami Frey especially good as soft spoken terrorist. Even Kinski was a good pick!

What the film demonstrates most obviously is that when there is this much plot on the screen, there isn't time for actors to develop anything much in the way of plausibility of characterization.
