This was the scariest movie I ever saw. This is where my love/hate relationship started with horror films. It's all my big brothers fault.

The film is drenched in a thick and moody atmosphere that truly transmits a sense of omnibus and foreboding dread to the viewer, and the acting (especially by Roddy McDowall) is actually quite good, but the narrative is nothing more than a rehash of "The Haunting" with a ridiculous climax... Still, the atmosphere itself warrants a viewing as it generates genuine suspense.

I love The Legend of Hell House. While its plotline is not very different from Robert Wise's classic The Haunting (based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House), The Legend of Hell House (based on Robert Matteson's novel Hell House) ups the ante with its disturbing depiction of sexuality, brutal murders, and increased focus on scientific attempts to grapple with the supernatural. An atmospheric and highly entertaining little horro gem that should delight any fans of haunted house films.

What I hate the most about modern "scarey" movie today is that they rely on gore and similar shock tactics to get a rise out of the viewer. In my opinion, it's is true psychological terror that will but the audience on the edge of there seats. And as far as haunted house movies go, it does very well. See it, at least just for the ending. It's priceless.

Taking the same premise as the far superior The Haunting (I'm talking about the Robert Wise version rather than the awful Jan de Bont one) director John Hough's movie is nicely framed - dig those nicely gothic exterior shots of the house - whilst indoors Pamela Franklin carries the movie as the mental psychic who gets more of a bum deal than the others. Nicely creepy just lacking a little something to really push it to a four star, hang on I know what it is, things kick off far too soon in the house so there's never any doubt that the house is haunted, that extra layer would have worked a treat. Even if they had waited and built up things more rather than jump in with both feet it would have been better. Ideal ghostly treat though for the festive season given that everything takes place in the lead up to it.
