The Last New Yorker (2010)

Lifelong friends Lenny Sugarman and Ruben Liebner , both in their 70s, both dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers, barely recognize the Manhattan of their youth. The city they've loved for decades has become a playground for the too-rich; their places, the ones they've frequented for years, are now refuges from a changing world they're increasingly unable to keep up with. When Lenny—a lone schemer all his life—finally gets in over his head, he decides to seek the one thing he's never had: true love. But to achieve it, he may have to abandon the only place he's ever known. THE LAST NEW YORKER is a tale of friendship, love and the world's greatest city -- and how all three keep us young and make us feel alive.

On the plus side, Derek McKane's moody camerawork makes Gotham look grand. Too bad it's wasted on The Last New Yorker.

I don't know why I thought it was a documentary; if only. Great locations, charming cast, terrible, undignified script.

Kam Williams 19 Feb 2010

A measured, minimalist masterpiece which is mostly a sweet homage to such rapidly disappearing Manhattan trademarks of yore as the neighborhood bar and the corner diner.

Cole Smithey 20 Feb 2010

Guided by photographer-turned-director Harvey Wang's keen eye for Manhattan's fast-disappearing landscape of dive bars, diners, and bodegas "The Last New Yorker" is delightful chamber piece of romantic comedy.

Stephen Holden 04 Jul 2017

The Last New Yorker would like to think of itself as a comic fairy tale, but Lenny’s pride and self-delusion are too pathetic to be amusing.
