The Jerk (1979)

After discovering he's not really black like the rest of his family, likable dimwit Navin Johnson sets off on a hilarious misadventure that takes him from rags to riches and back again. Quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. Steve Martin in his prime.

There aren't many comedies like this that work, that are both self-aware yet 100% completely committed to its characters so as not to make them caricatures. In that sense I would compare it to more recent films like Anchorman, but the styles of humor are slightly different. There's a reason why it's on AFI's top 100 Laughs list... though in my opinion it should be higher than #89.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and call this one of the top 5 funniest movies of all time. YMMV, but that's where my head's at.
