Director Andrei Kravchuk infuses his story with a Dickensian mix of benevolence and indifference. The pacing is assured, and his cameras peek through the Russian mist as if watching a fairy tale, uncertain of a happy or cruel ending.

I'll admit that I fell asleep initially while watching. The pace didn't pick up until the little kid runs away. It's a beautiful tale of innocence and bravery.

I was trying not to cry in front of my brother-in-law. It does have some parts that will make you smile, it's not all gloom. See it if you have a sweet spot for Russian orphans or just plain Russians. It looks so cold there.

A lovely Russian (and sometimes heartwrenching to watch) movie. Mainly because the young lead actor does such a good job of portraying the brave orphan, who is determined to find his real mother before he gets adopted by an Italian couple. I was so concerned as to what was going to happen to him, I checked IMDB just to see if the ending was happy or sad.
