Superb. An imagining of the state of mind of Nellie Ternan, Dickens' mistress for thirteen years, after his death and her reinvention as an eighteen-year-old at the age of thirty-one. The script, acting and filming are all excellent, and the tale itself is haunting. All kinds of issues around the role of women and the nature of Victorian society are presented for consideration in a non-judgemental framework.

Probably the best of all the films we have seen this year. It is a chamber piece, beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted. The sexual politics are interesting and casual stereotypes avoided. Ralph Fiennes drove the whole thing as director and the Great Man,.Tom Hollander, Felicity Jones and Kirsten Scott-Thomas were very good but it was the tragic dignity of mrs Dickens played by Joanna Scanlon, that moved me greatly

A career high point for Ralph Fiennes as both an actor and director, this unfussy and emotionally penetrating work also provides lead actress Felicity Jones with the prime role in which she abundantly fulfills the promise suggested in some of her earlier small films.

This is only Fiennes' second directorial effort -- following the gutsy 2011 Shakespeare adaptation Coriolanus -- but it's already clear he's as indispensable a director as he is an actor.

Finely wrought period-piece and fine turns Felicity Jones and Ralph Fiennes.
