Why do people run this film down, I cant stand Ricky Gervais, but this film just works for me, his mum dying made me cry, yes its far from perfect, but its still nice

I loved this movie. It was original, made me laugh, and took my mind off of things for awhile. Also, my husband managed to stay awake during it, so it must have been good. In this fictional society, mankind not only lacks the ability to tell a lie, they also feel strongly compelled to share the truth about how they feel, no matter what the consequences. No more wondering what people think of you! In fact, no more secrets in general. The genius is in the details though. Without the ability to lie, people aren't creative or imaginative, they cannot embellish, exaggerate. Movies are literally a film of someone reading a history book... fiction just doesn't exist. Even the paintings on the walls, you will notice, are realistic replicas of things around the room (like doorknobs and headboards). There is the slight chance that highly religious people could be offended by the implication that religion must be based in fiction, since it is not a reality in this truth-based world. If you just go with it though, you should have a good time.

Everybody that rated this movie poorly is an idot. It was comedy that challenges you at ever turn. Wich is the best kind of comedy. And it also had some very touching moments. If you dont get this movie its cuz your one of the shallow dumb persons that Gervais is making fun of. Sure it has some faults but the good far exceeds the bad.

I thought this film was pretty funny. The premise is interesting. It is a world where people have to tell the truth. But I wondered many times what forced people in this to film voluntarily provide information that was not asked for. So not only did they have to tell the truth but they also had some compulsion to tell people things that were embarrassing for some reason. It probably was just to make the film funnier but it just bothered me.

kind of bad start... but good when he tells his dying mother about heaven... (doesn't call it that though) ... after that its a great mix of comedy and emotion ... and trying to find true meaning of happiness
