Paris, France, 1482. Frollo, Chief Justice of benevolent King Louis XI, gets infatuated by the beauty of Esmeralda, a young Romani girl. The hunchback Quasimodo, Frollo's protege and bell-ringer of Notre Dame, lives in peace among the bells in the heights of the immense cathedral until he is involved by the twisted magistrate in his malicious plans to free himself from Esmeralda's alleged spell, which he believes to be the devil's work.

It was a good movie even though it didn't follow the book very well. Although for a happy ending, it was a decent change.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an amazing film. It is about a gypsy girl who is framed for murder by the infatuated Chief Justice, and only the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral can save her in 15th century France. Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara give amazing performances. The screenplay is well written. William Dieterle did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a must see.

Not as good as I remembered, but it still maintains a good sense of atmosphere and some strong performances. It's just that the effect is weakened by it's rather loose storytelling.

Another of my childhood favourites. I've seen this propably 100 times and Laughton remains my choice for Quasimodo. Very atmospheric.

A beautifully dark film with the priceless performance by Charles Laughton which deserved an Oscar if it were not for Robert Donat's exquisite portrayal of Mr. Chipping. This is the kind of performance which comes to min when you quickly try to compile a "best-ever" list. The adaptation itself is worthy of its predecessor of 1923.
