Paris, France, 1482. Frollo, Chief Justice of benevolent King Louis XI, gets infatuated by the beauty of Esmeralda, a young Romani girl. The hunchback Quasimodo, Frollo's protege and bell-ringer of Notre Dame, lives in peace among the bells in the heights of the immense cathedral until he is involved by the twisted magistrate in his malicious plans to free himself from Esmeralda's alleged spell, which he believes to be the devil's work.

Waaaaarrter waaaarrter, this guy is good at swinging tho check im out, straight to the rescue... This film is one of my old favourites 9.9/10

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) -- [6.0] -- Charles Laughton's performance as Quasimodo is the main reason to see this movie. Laughton gives the deformed bellringer moments of quiet torment as well as unbridled joy, and without ever going over the top - a remarkable feat that should have earned him an Oscar nomination. I also liked Cedric Hardwicke as the malevolent Frollo and Maureen O'Hara (in her screen debut) as Esmerelda, but several of the other cast members act as though they are playing cartoon characters (Harry Davenport is the worst offender). The film could have benefitted from a more genuine period setting and a more earnest supporting cast. Director William Dieterle bestows the film with some elegance, though it's not nearly as polished as his "The Devil and Daniel Webster."

when i was 7 years old this movie was my absolute favourite. but i was very afriad of the hunchbak. but i loved him. heartbreaking.

With the exception of a few changes, is probably the best adaptation of Victor Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame I've seen by far.

This movie is one of my favorites of all time and remains the best version of Victor Hugo's novel. Charles Laughton's portrayal of Quasimado is superb. Cinematography is stunning and the sets give the right impression of the period.
