Paris, France, 1482. Frollo, Chief Justice of benevolent King Louis XI, gets infatuated by the beauty of Esmeralda, a young Romani girl. The hunchback Quasimodo, Frollo's protege and bell-ringer of Notre Dame, lives in peace among the bells in the heights of the immense cathedral until he is involved by the twisted magistrate in his malicious plans to free himself from Esmeralda's alleged spell, which he believes to be the devil's work.

It was a good movie even though it didn't follow the book very well. Although for a happy ending, it was a decent change.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an amazing film. It is about a gypsy girl who is framed for murder by the infatuated Chief Justice, and only the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral can save her in 15th century France. Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara give amazing performances. The screenplay is well written. William Dieterle did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a must see.

Probably the best film adaptation of this novel with Charles Laughton turning in an incredible performance under a ton of makeup and Cedric Hardwicke turning in a wonderfully detestable villain performance. It's a consistently great ensemble ... even if Maureen O'Hara is not really plausible as a gypsy.
