if i had to describe it in one short phrase, this movie is untruthfully clever. theater actors as they may be, these boys - nay, men capture the essence of their characters in even small facial tics... brilliant film adaptation of a liberal yet poignantly conservative play by alan bennett (who's a bloody genius!) the ending too is touching. and includes lots of historical trivia for lorelli and gibbons kids..

A fantastic movie that asks questions about education for educations sake. It is very play like in that the scenes are almost static, so if you are hoping for great sweeping action scenes move along nothing to see here, but if you are interested in films as arenas for provoking debate then this is a great movie. Some people maybe disturbed by the fact that Hector's fondling of the boys is treated with amusement and not horror, but I can say from experience that some schools have teachers who go that bit too far and the kids just laugh it off rather than seeing themselves as victims.

I wish I had an education like this. I would take it over any of my classes any day. The conversations between the boys, in and out of school, were really close to what high school boys are really like. It was heartwarming without being soppy. It was incredibly witty. I wish I knew boys like this ;)

This film was consistently damned with faint praise when it was released for looking like a stage play. That's not it, actually - it sounds like one. Modern British theatre has a style, tempo and feel which this script punches out, right up to the stylised but incredibly moving 'pause to look forward' scene at the end. But I love theatre and I love film. They aren't mutually exclusive, and I loved this film. The characters, whilst in a couple of instances, sketchy, are all real. The language (I refuse to say the WORDS) is evocative, the performances nuanced (you can tell how well these lads know characters they played for some time on stage). It conveys a passion for leanring, the importance of school, and of 'real' education, and how being keen to learn doesn't mean that you aren't a real person. Nostalgia? For me, certainly, though it was 15 years before I was the same age. But it stimulates, and entertains, and engages. I loved it.
