Paloma is a serious and highly articulate but deeply bored 11-year-old who has decided to kill herself on her 12th birthday. Fascinated by art and philosophy, she questions and documents her life and immediate circle, drawing trenchant and often hilarious observations on the world around her. But as her appointment with death approaches, Paloma finally meets some kindred spirits in her building's grumpy janitor and an enigmatic, elegant neighbor, both of whom inspire Paloma to question her rather pessimistic outlook on life.

The Hedgehog is full of heart, passion, and human longing - but also a good dose of existentialism. Think of it as Sartre's "Being and Nothingness"-meets-Dr. Seuss.

Oh~ i love this story and it's very inspiring! People living around the world, some of them but may not all of them, always keep some distance from others and just like a hedgehog. I quite like this pholosophy. Want to be elegant? pretending or trully inside? Life is short! Why do we hold a pessimistic outlook on life? We still need to keep acting and finish this role!

A lovely film (based on the book) that takes place in Paris, about the unlikely relationships between a precocious 11-year old, a surly concierge who is not who she appears to be, and an aging Japanese businessman. Touching, whimsical, and oh-so-French in the best way imaginable. Loved it. Can't wait to read the book now.

It's a surprising film, largely because of the way it successfully combines these odd elements: three misfits in the enclosed, strictly hierarchical world of an elegant old Parisian building.
