The Harder They Come (1972)

Ivanhoe Martin arrives in Kingston, Jamaica, looking for work and, after some initial struggles, lands a recording contract as a reggae singer. He records his first song, "The Harder They Come," but after a bitter dispute with a manipulative producer named Hilton, soon finds himself resorting to petty crime in order to pay the bills. He deals marijuana, kills some abusive cops and earns local folk hero status. Meanwhile, his record is topping the charts.

This was an amazing movie enjoyed every moment of it. It provided a peek into the struggles of the urban poor in the 1960's and shows how little things have changed since then. Issues such as corruptions and crime have increased exponentially, the dons are still glorified in songs and dance for their actions. I Thoroughly recommend this.

The only film you ever need to see. A fantastic look at the Rudeboy culture of Kingston in the 70's, and the soundtrack can't be faulted. I watched it everyday for a week.

Revisando el cine de culto, recuerdo esta pelicula que vi en mis dias en la UNAM, y que ahora solo se la podria recomendar a los que gustan del (neo)realismo y, sobretodo, a los amantes del reggae. Pues, terminas coreando la cancion de J.Cliff.
