This is a small, really nice film. Malkovich is terrific as the downside-of-his-career mentalist Buck Howard. He imbues the character with pride, bravado, humor, and sadness. Think a lighter version of "The Wrestler" without the staples. Colin Hanks turns in an extremely likable performance as Howard's new road manager. Some great as-themselves cameos, not to mention Dave Atell and Ralph Malph in tiny parts. My one gripe is that Hanks's I-wanna-be-a-writer-not-a-lawyer storyline is laid on a bit thick, making me think it's autobiographical from the writer/director. However, this plot strand does let us see Tom Hanks as the dad, so, I guess it's OK. And the filmmakers know that you can't have a movie involving magic without Ricky Jay in it.

This was a VERY well made movie. Although you never truly get to know Buck Howard, it's how the movie was meant to be. You were supposed to see the man through Troy's eyes, and Troy never really got to know him, either. Buck Howard is a man of many mysteries, and it's probably better that it's kept that way. That way, he represents more than just a man, and moves on to show that the impossible just might be possible. John Malkovich is great as usual, although he just might be at the top of his game here.

He could kill small children with that hand shake but Buck Howard and the man who plays him truly are great, even if the movie is very average when he's off camera.

It's a worthwhile movie on par with the rest of Malkovich's work (as much as I've seen) but it just didn't resound with me, perhaps because the theme, the moral of the movie if you will, is something I've already figured out for myself. As usual, Malkovich gives an amazing performance.

A very nice performance of Jonh and an Ok performance of Tom's kid, I expected more from Hanks though, but Malkovick made me laugh a lot and he gave the movie the magical touch, no doubt. It also shows the materialism of the todays media and how the world in a moment displaces you with something else very easy no matter what or who you where, from how many years, sad.
