Good solid crime drama with real chemistry between Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.

Quaint film noir. Despite being based on a story by Dashiel Hammet, it's nowhere near being in the same league as the Maltese Falcon; and despite being a noir from the classic era of noirs, it's not all that big on suspense or tragedy. If this was a Coke it'd be a Diet Coke.

There's some chemistry between two of the leads and everyone seems better when Alan Ladd is around. Otherwise, not the most inventive film noir or mystery.

Rather convoluted crime drama starring the beautiful, ultimately tragic actress Veronica Lake. Enjoy her beauty because as she freely admitted herself, her talent was pretty much non-existent.

Totally enjoyable early noir, though I find the Ladd/Lake pairing totally lame, Brian Donlevy is excellent. Taut script, the direction and photography is pretty good too.
