A classic noir mystery based on Dashiell Hammet's best known novel, and also Veronica Lake's best film, this abounds with great performances, with a solid no-nonsense performance by Alan Ladd. Brian Donlevy seemed tailor-made for the slick political kingmaker, Paul Madvig, as was William Bendix as Jeff, the sadistic bodyguard.

Possibly the first film I recall seeing Alan Ladd in, and another smoldering performance from Veronica Lake, who I love so very much. Definitely something I'll be revisiting soon and often, as it's just a helluva lot of fun. Recommended.

the boss's fixer doesn't grow a conscience, but a dame gets him to decide to quit anyway.

This is a classic Film Noir with an apparent simple story that turns out to be a decent plot of politics, murder, and betrayal with great moments of realistic gang violence. I believe it's not one of the famous movies of the genre but it's worth finding it for those who collect noir.

Inspired both Yojimbo and Miller's Crossing.
